The Asheboro Open 58 Grand Champion
FIDE Master Ron Simpson
June 2010
FM Ron Simpson continued his domination in Asheboro this month, surviving a fierce Smith-Morra Gambit by James Watson in round three which nearly toppled his king. (According to Deep Rybka 4, Watson missed a decisive continuation during his brutal onslaught). The former NC Champion earned $140.00 for his efforts. As usual, Ron spent a good deal of time analyzing his own games, and helping others with theirs. Fayetteville's Paul King was undefeated after a half point bye for round one, earning clear second place and $65.00 worth of respect. Friend Larry Williams was awarded the $35.00 class prize with a solid 2-0 showing, despite a second round rook sac by Reynaldo Diaz that "swindled" him out of a clear win. Always a gentleman, Larry laughed it off and continued to play well.

When Ron Simpson told me that he missed my games postings, it was bittersweet. It meant a lot to know that he appreciated my efforts, but I also felt like hiding behind a rock for getting so far behind! Armed with Deep Rybka 4, I have posted 10 more deeply annotated quality games. Look them NOW in the NC Chess Games Database. My apologies to Grace Campbell, who promptly sent me one of her handwritten games from the NC Girls Championship via US Mail. Unfortunately, her promptness was not reciprocated on my part. I will try to do better.
Congratulations to our June 2010 Champions!

Jordan Eliseo
First Place, Candidates Section
June 2010
The Candidates Section this month was well-balanced to be competitive, with seven of the competitors in the 1500s. Jordan Eliseo had a strong performance, and bested three of the highest rated players to earn clear first place, and the $140.00 prize. Theresa Williams, a former NC Women's Champion and wife of Larry Williams, went undefeated after a first round bye to tie for second place. I saw the final position in one of her victories, and it looked like Paul Morphy had been crushing someone. Kevin Tie also scored 2.5 in his first Asheboro Open to split the $65.00 second place prize with Mrs. Williams. Kevin is quickly making a name for himself in scholastic chess, and beyond. Lookout!

Derek Chen
First Place, Club Section
June 2010
What can I say about Derek Chen? Back for more after a disappointing showing last month, he swept the Club Section 3-0 to win the $140.00 first place prize. I am always impressed with Derek's focus during his games, and he will soon "graduate" into the Candidates Section. Underestimate this tiger at your own peril. Greensboro's Rick Johnson tied with North Carolina newcomer Supradeep Madduri, earning $50.00 each. I expect great things from these two scholastic contenders. (Photographer's note: Supradeep made a face for the first photo I took, and it turned out to be the only clear one of the three! "Make faces at your own peril!" Actually, I think the photo turned out great.)
