FIDE Master Ron Simpson

May 2010

Former NC Champion FM Ron Simpson needed BOTH flaming rooks to battle his way through an extremely tough Championship Section this month.  Besting NM Chris Mabe is no cake-walk on a good day, and Simpson was no doubt happy to have his chance with the white pieces.  In typical Simpson Style, the FIDE Master was in no hurry to collect his $170.00 cash prize after prevailing--but instead hurried out to analyze the game with NM Mabe.  Note the time on the clock:  Simpson was the first clear winner to finish, but last to leave.  Are you that dedicated to excellence?

No less dramatic was the competition for second place honors.  Grace Campbell surprised three opponents with her inspired play, and finished with 2.5 to win $85.00.  This included a well-earned draw against former NC Champion Dan Liu.  Grace also picked up 55 USCF rating points, and is closing in on Class A status.   Greensboro's Kevin Chen earned the $45.00 class prize with score of 2.0--his only loss to Grace in round three.  But that's only part of the story.  His outstanding performance included convincing wins against Scholastic Champion Will Campbell and NM Leland Fuerstman.  The latter was lavish in his praise, predicting great things for the scholastic powerhouse.  Kevin earned 68 USCF rating points for his superb effort.

Look for some of the the tournament games to be posted soon in the NC Chess Games Database.  I've fallen behind in this regard, but expect a large batch of games soon.

First Place Tie, Candidate's Section

May 2010

A large section this month led to two players with perfect scores sharing first place honors.  Playing in only his fourth event, Ricky Sabhikhi turned in a fine performance that earned him $127.50 and 266 USCF rating points!  Co-champion Jeff Schneider is quickly becoming a regular at NC tournaments, and his rating and results reflect his dedication.  A flawless 3-0 performance earned him $127.50, and a sizeable rating boost of 29 points.  The class prize of $45.00 was split between David Holmquist, who was playing in his first Asheboro Open, and young Avery LoganAvery's exceptional performance earned him a whopping 193 USCF points!  This is extraordinary for a "non provisional" player, so the USCF flagged it as being a potential error in the original rating report.  When the USCF is incredulous with your performance, you've had a great day!
