Alan Rufty

Our NC Chess Champion for 1967 (anecdotal)

Our only evidence to date for the NC Chess Champion of 1967 is anecdotal; however, it came from a reliable source and is almost certainly accurate.

NM David Steele, a five-time NC Champion himself, recounts:

I have no documentation of this, but I believe our 1967 champion must have been Alan Rufty. (He moved to Virginia and was the VA champ in 1977.)

I think this because I remember him representing NC on 1st board in one of the annual NC-VA matches. The first board for each state was always the state champion; the other 24 boards were arranged by rating.  I remember Alan playing Charlie Powell.  Charlie was the VA champ in 1964, 1965, 1966 ,1967, 1971, 1972, and 1976.  1967 is the only one of those years that we don't have a champion listed.  They played with no set and no board!  They both were proud of their ability to play blindfold chess, and agreed to play with no board (I guess the team captains must have agreed too); they just passed their score sheets back and forth.  It was a peculiar thing to see.  I don't remember the result, but Charlie probably won; he was a stronger player than Alan then.  And yes, Virginia usually trounced us with their deeper bench.
